Firebird Editing

Welcome to Firebird Editing, where the goal is to bring your manuscript to life and watch it transform into its most glorious form. We specialize in novel-length fiction by independent authors, particularly fantasy novels of all types and romantic comedies. We offer a variety of services, from developmental editing down to proofreading, with package deals for multiple services at discounted rates. Whether your novel is in its early stages and needs big picture reworking or your novel is almost ready for publication and just needs a final look, Firebird Editing has an option for you!
Because fantasy worlds are as unique as their authors, you may be asked to provide a style sheet or work with the editor to create a style sheet for your manuscript. This helps us look at your manuscript and suggest changes without changing your intent—no point in leaving suggestions changing “colour” to “color” if you’re intentionally using British spelling consistently. Likewise, we want to know how capitalization in your world works, so we don’t change atraxi to Atraxi unnecessarily.
Our end goal is to build a close editor/author relationship where both sides regularly discuss the manuscript, collaborate to improve the story, and make your novel the best it can be. Check out our Services page for more information about what we offer, or reach out through the Contact Page (or email firebirdediting@gmail.com) to discuss a plan!
My Guiding Principles
At Firebird Editing, we follow three guiding principles to ensure that you, the author, are getting our best work, experience, and bang for your buck.
-
I will be direct. My goal is to help make your novel the best it can be, and the best way to get there is to be upfront when I see issues. I’ll strive to remain constructive at all times, but I will tell you if something isn’t working.
-
I will be thinking of the big picture. You wrote a book; likely, your next goal is to get it in front of audiences. I will offer suggestions and commentary to improve audience comprehension and engagement.
-
Everything is a conversation. I want you to review my comments and discuss them with me if something is not clear. I want you to discuss if you disagree with a suggestion. I’m happy to explain where it comes from. But I don’t want you to feel like you need to blindly accept everything I say.
Testimonials
Working with Alex's insightful feedback helped me refine my prose and grow as an author. He challenged me to think more deeply about my own writing to further refine my characters and plot. If you're looking for a thorough, detailed read of you work, Alex is for you. His notes and general commentary boosted me to write more confidently. Not only were his line edits helpful, but his feedback stays in my mind as I continue to write, pushing me further as an author. I am very grateful for his support and would recommend him highly for anyone hoping to improve their craft and abilities as a writer.
